ALUMNI SUCCESS STORIES
Simon Skafu (24)
Simon is from the Western Cape and has been with the FBF since 1999. 
He has always been a very responsible young man and due to his dedication and hard work he was chosen as one of the Norwegian exchange students in 2001. On his return from Norway he served his one-year dedication period in the Foundation. At the same time the Foundation allocated a bursary to him to follow a bridging course at the University of Stellenbosch.

Should the Tennessee State University programme work out he is our first choice student to benefit from this opportunity. Simon is a trombonist.

Daniel Mate
Daniel has also been part of the Foundation since 1999. In 2004 he finished school and despite serious financial challenges took himself off to the Technicon where he followed a basic music programme for one year. It was this initiative that he showed as well as his overall commitment and hard work that made him eligible as the second candidate for the Tennessee University programme.

Left to right: Phumezo Hlanganise, Maria Nxumalo, Gift Mhlangu and Sifiso Langa (2006) Since 1999 we have sent a number of youngsters to the USA annually from May till August. They join the Pioneer Drum Corps, one of the 10 best youth marching bands in the USA.


In total we have sent 48 members of the Field Band to the USA since 1999.

Norwegian Exchange

2000 - Njabulo Mtshali
Njabulo was one of the first Norwegian exchange students in 2000. He has become a wonderful euphonium player and upon his return joined the Navy Band.  He played there until 2006 when he moved to the Bisho Police Bansd. Since his arrival there he has volunteered as a teacher in the Mdantsane Field Band near East London

2000 - Riaan van Heerden
Riaan went with Njabulo in 2000 to Norway. His gift lies in teaching and upon his return he established the Cullinan field band and then moved to East London where he is now the band coordinator for that area.


2001 - Andes Doubell
Andes returned from Norway and joined the head-office as assistant administrator. After completing a course in arts management he decided to go back to study full time.

2001 – Peter Aaron
Peter Aaron came back from Norway and was a tutor in the band in Kimberley for another three years. In 2006 he has been promoted to assistant regional coordinator.

2001 – Takatso Mtswene
Takatso continued to teach in the Foundation. He is the Dobsonville band coordinator and recently he successfully auditioned for the Air Force Bandand will be joining them at the beginning of 2007.

2002 – Neville Arnolds
Neville has been with the Foundation since 1997. He went on the to Norway and improved his technique on the drums. On his return he was appointed as a band coordinator for the Stellenbosch Field Bands. He has established his own Jazz Band. Success was quick in coming and just recently they secured a six-month contract to play every weekend at one of the top wine estates in the Cape.  This is really what the Foundation flourishes on – go and make a life with the skills we have provided.

2003 – Keith Esau
Keith has always been with the Foundation and upon his return to SA worked in port Elizabeth as a tutor. At the beginning of 2006 he started a B Mus degree at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

2003 – Ashton Dolph
Ashton has also always been with the Foundation and has joined Keith at University in 2006. Both have received bursaries from the Foundation with the help of the MAID Foundation.

2003 - Bheki Jodwana
Bheki is a wonderful tuba player and recently he successfully auditioned for the Air Force Band and will be joining them at the beginning of 2007

Other

Nathan Lawrence
Nathan has been with the Foundation since 1997 and always showed extraordinary dedication. He has worked very hard and did well at school, which meant that he could go straight to University. He is presently a student at the Stellenbosch University studying B Mus with the support of the FBF.

Luvuyo Cesiko
Luvuyo also from the Western Cape was first a musician in the field band, then had a liking for fixing instruments and became the trainee-instrument repairer, with our Norwegian exchange programme. However he always dreamed of being a nurse and we managed to help him to secure a scholarship to study nursing for 4 years.However he will continue to do instrument repair for the Foundation.


Monwabisi Bangiwe
Monwabisi is famous within the Foundation. Starting as a little dancer he ended up as the dance tutor within the Foundation. His gifts were obvious. We were fortunate to secure a bursary for him to the Pretoria Technicon Dance School where he successfully concluded his three-year Dance Diploma at the end of 2005. He has just secured his first work as a professional dancer with a contract for 7 months.
